10 Days Rwanda and Uganda Combined Gorilla Safari

The ten days primates tracking tour starts and ends in Kigali and end in Entebbe (Uganda)

  • Day 1: Depart for Nyungwe Forest National park.

After a relaxed breakfast, you will set off a scenic drive to Nyungwe Forest National Park with en-route visit to Nyanza king’s palace, Butare national museum. Reach Nyungwe Forest in the evening for Dinner and overnight at Gisakura Guest House /Nyungwe top view hotel / One&Only Nyungwe House.

  • Day 2: Chimpanzee trekking and Afternoon colobus Monkey

nyungwe-forest-chimpanzeeTake your breakfast before 6.00 am and embark on chimpanzee trekking in Nyungwe Forest. Expect to encounter other primates such as vervet monkeys, baboons among others as well as forest birds, and butterflies. In the afternoon, you will go for colobus monkey tracking in the forest. Return in the evening for dinner and overnight (Day 1).

  • Day 3: Set off for Volcanoes National park

In the morning, you will set off a scenic drive northwards to Volcanoes national park in Ruhengeri, a home to 360 Mountain Gorillas. Dinner and overnight at Mountain Gorillas view Hotel / Bisate Lodge / Le Bambou Gorilla Lodge, Virunga or Sabyinyo Lodge and Muhabura Hotel.

  • Day 4: First Gorilla Trek in Rwanda

In the morning at 7:30 am, you will assemble at the park headquarters for a briefing in the morning together with your trekking gear and drinking water and packed lunch. Later ascend in the forest to track the gorillas, an activity that will take you 2-8 hours depending on the movement of the apes in their natural wild. After meeting and staying in the presence of the gorillas for a maximum of one hour, descend back to your hotel for relaxation. In the evening, you may go for a nature walk or visit the Banyarwanda community. Dinner and overnight stay.

  • Day 5:  Track golden Monkeys / Dian Fossey hike

In the morning, you will gather at the park headquarters for briefing, and later Either go for golden monkey tracking or hike up to Karisoke research centre, established by Dian Fossey, an American primatologist who dedicated all her life conserving the lives of mountain gorillas until she was killed and is buried there next to Digit, a mountain gorilla. You will learn more about the lives of the mountain gorillas at the research center. On return, you will cross over to Uganda and drive to Bwindi impenetrable national park, home to half of the world’s remaining mountain gorillas. Dinner and overnight at Mahogany Springs Lodge, Gorilla Mist Camp, Engagi Lodge, Bakiga Lodge, Buhoma Lodge, Sanctuary Gorilla Forest Camp or Trackers safari lodge.

  • Day 6: Second gorilla tracking

In the morning, assemble at the park headquarters for briefing from the park rangers about the dos and don’ts while with the gorillas. Proceed for the memorable adventure in the forest, an activity that may take 2-6 hours depending on the movement of the animals. Meet and stay with the animals for a maximum of one hour, then descend to the park headquarters and then to your Lodge for lunch and relaxation. In the evening, you may go for a community walk in the nearby Batwa community, where you will be entertained and told the tales of their unique culture. Dinner and overnight at your hotel.

  • Day 7: Transfer to Queen Elizabeth National Park

In the morning, you will set off to Queen Elizabeth National Park passing via the Ishasha sector where you will have game drives to see the tree-climbing lions and a variety of bird species. Reach the park early enough for lunch. In the afternoon, gather at the Kazinga channel for a boat cruise along the channel where you will be rewarded with a view of the game as Hippos, crocodiles, buffalos, elephants as well as a variety of birds. Dinner and overnight at Mweya Safari Lodge / Enganzi lodge / King Fisher Lodge or Bush Lodge.

  • Day 8: Game drive and Transfer to Kibale National Park

Early morning cup of tea/ coffee, you will wake up to go for game drives to catch up with early risers before returning to their hiding places. You will encounter game like lions, hyenas, bushbucks, elephants among others. In the afternoon, you will transfer to Kibale National Park, home of 13 primate species. Dinner and overnight at Papaya Lake Lodge, Isunga Lodge, Kyaninga Lodge, Chimpanzee guest house or Kibale primates Lodge.

  • Day 9: Chimpanzee tracking and afternoon nature walk

Breakfast and drive to the park headquarters for the chimpanzee briefing by the forest guide. You will locate the chimps by listening for their pant-hooting calls, then hustle to the area from which they are calling. You will see more other primates such as the red colobus, black and white colobus, and the red-tailed monkey. After lunch, go for a nature walk in Bigodi wetland sanctuary or visit the “Amabeere ganyina mwiru,” a cultural rock shaped like a woman’s breasts, where you will be told historical and cultural tales about the rock.

  • Day 10: Drive to Kampala and Departure

In the morning after a relaxed breakfast, you will transfer to Kampala, reaching early in the afternoon to transfer to Entebbe airport for departure or check in your hotel for overnight stay.
