Nyanza Genocide memorial site is situated in Kicukiro, a suburb in southeastern die of Kigali juts next to the Airport. This genocide memorial centre features mostly the tiled tops of 4 mass graves where remains of over 4000 Tutsis who took cover around the Ecole Technique Officielle grounds for safety. After 10 of the Belgian soldiers were assassinated at camp Kigali and several withdrawals of Belgian troops, the Tutsis around this place remained with no protection and they were taken to Nyanza where they were murdered. They came to the station around 7th April 1994. Later, the Hutus murdered about 10 Belgian soldiers at Kigali camp and the UN chose to leave Rwanda and the Belgian soldiers also left the school and the refugees who confined here were left with no one to protect them and this claimed most of their lives.

The Hutus reached and took refugees to Nyanza, a garbage dump where they terribly murdered. It is believed that the refugees tried begging the Belgian troops to stay back and some even requested to be shot other than face terrible murder by Hutus.

Meanwhile others were forced to lie with a hope that the Belgian troops would stop but they responded by firing shots in the air and they went and the helpless men, women and children were left them to meet her fate.

Kicukiro district features about 6 genocide memorial centres and Nyanza ya Kicukiro is one of them but unfortunately innocent lives were claimed. This area has comprises of about 11000 Tutsi victims and today, most visitors frequent to this site while on Rwanda safaris and tours as a way to pay tribute to their relatives. About 14000 were buried at Rebero genocide memorial site.
