Twin Lakes Burera and Ruhondo in Rwanda

There are also known as the twin lakes of Rwanda, Burera and Ruhondo are situated on the borders of Rwanda and Uganda with their own special attractions. It should be noted that, Lake kivu is the largest Rwanda but Burera and Ruhondo are the most beautiful and the canoe sailing on these lakes (Burera and Buhondo) is memorable.

From Uganda, twin lakes can be toured en route on the way to Volcanoes National park through Cyanika border however from Rwanda, the twin lakes are attractive places to visit after gorilla tracking in Volcanoes National Park in the bamboo forest of Volcanoes National Park.

Musanze town is superbly located at the foot of the volcanoes. In the city suburb, you can see the natural bridge of Musanze – solidified lava flow – which signals the volcanoes’ activity that shaped the landscape.

One hours drive from Musanze town, you find the magnificent lakes of Burera and Ruhondo. Closer to the gorilla’s home, Lakes Burera and Ruhondo are real gems you must not miss due to amazing attractions like birds, fish and so on which are found lingering around the shores. Their deep blue water is surrounded by high hills. From these come immense water falls that decorate volcanoes in a spectacular way. Through splendid excursions in the “land of a thousand hills”, you discover unforgettable beauty, sublime colors and a fantastic universe of Lakes Burera, Ruhondo and Kivu where many merry children burst into laughter.

Excursions around these lakes make it possible to explore the green volcano slopes, the giant volcanoes, the last heaven for mountain gorillas. Strong feelings and magic places that take your breath! Some visitors decide to stay at Virunga Lodge since it provides a clear view of the beautiful lakes. The mighty virunga mountains are also worth a view making northern Rwanda a must visit.
